This chart will select, the total amount of horsepower required to treat a given waste if the BOD (mg/l) and the daily flow (gallons/day) are known.
To use, select the appropriate daily waste flow on the left-hand side of the chart. Extend a horizontal line to the right until you intersect the appropriate BOD curve. Drop a line and read the vertical horsepower required for aeration.
Calculations are based on the desired BOD reduction of 90%, α factor of 0.8, 1.25# O2/LB.BOD and a standard
condition transfer of 3.5# O2/HP-HR.
Accuracy is usually within
10%.
